CODI Conference 2000

President’s Letter

Welcome to the May issue of the CODI Newsletter. There have been many exciting things happening in CODI since the last Newsletter. As you know, we held our 11th Annual Conference in Tampa in March. There were 529 registered attendees and 20 vendors. For the first time we included captioning of some of the session for the hearing impaired and got a lot of positive feedback. Some of the presenters have supplied copies of their sessions and we hope to post these as well as some photos on the CODI webpage.

The program was very strong this year and the feedback from the membership reflected that. Special thanks goes to John Hurley for the excellent job he did on the program. Scott Wheelhouse of epixtech presented a look at the future of electronic libraries at the Second General Session. The possibilities for electronic service to our patrons through partnerships with commercial vendors look very exciting. We eagerly await epixtech’s partnership announcements.

Again, the issues of the Sunrise evolution were of paramount importance to the membership at the conference. This year we seem to have overcome our fear and addressed the possible paths available to all of the membership. Direct movement from Dynix to Sunrise was discussed as a possible choice for the first time. The most important thing to remember is that the Dynix software will be supported and upgraded for many, many years to come. No one will be left behind. It is CODI’s intention to get ALL of us there eventually.

Our Past President, Susan Johns, and Brian Hackett, Secretary of the UK HUG, have worked very hard of late to write a Memorandum of Understanding the purpose of which is to join the various users groups into an international federation. This memorandum was discussed and ratified by CODI Board of Trustees at our April meeting. A copy of the memorandum will follow this message. We hope with this undertaking to work together with our international peers for the betterment of us all.

The CODI ballots have been mailed recently. I hope you will all take the time to read the candidate statements and vote. Included are the Bylaws changes. Bob Gale and his committee have worked very hard to update our Bylaws. With the changes in the product and our new international initiatives it is imperative to keep our Bylaws up to date. This will be an ongoing process so you will continue to see updates in the future.

Again through the efforts of Susan Johns, we are poised to merge with our peer group to the north, CANDU. The Canadian Dynix Users group and CODI broached this merger over a year ago. With some hard work and the excellent efforts of Susan, Kit Darling and Jim Forrester, this merger will be accomplished this year. Susan will attend the CANDU meeting in Edmonton to represent CODI. We have created a seat on the CODI Board for a Canadian representative. You will see that change in the Bylaws in Article VI, 8b.We welcome our neighbors to the CODI family and look forward to seeing them at the next CODI Conference in Salt Lake City.

Please note that the Salt Lake City conference dates are March 7th – 10th. It is important to note that the conference in 2001 will be longer. So mark your calendars and plan your budgets accordingly.
